Matthew was born on April 14, 1999 in Simi Valley, California, the son of Bill and Shari Wolf. Raised in Agoura Hills, California, he began golfing at Lake Lindero Country Club and attended Westlake High School. In 2017 he finished second in the US Junior Amateur Golf Championships.

Wolf initially chose to play college golf at the University of Southern California, but later chose Oklahoma State University. As a freshman, he received four finalists, All-American First Team Awards, and the Phil Mickelson Award for best freshman in the nation. In 2018, he won the NCAA Division I Oklahoma State Championship.

As a sophomore, he played in the Carmel Cup and the OFCC Fighting Illini Invitational. He then made his PGA Tour debut at the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Wolf turned pro in June 2019, making his pro debut at the Travelers Championship. His first PGA Tour victory was on July 7, 2019 at the 3M Open at the TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota. Matthew Wolf is only the third player to win an NCAA title and a PGA Tour title in the same calendar year. The other two were Tiger Woods and Ben Crenshaw.
