Holmes was born on April 26, 1982 in Campbellsville, Kentucky. He attended Taylor County High School where he began playing golf. In high school, he competed on the Pepsi Junior Golf Tour. Holmes then attended the University of Kentucky where he won the SEC title and also represented the United States at the 2005 Walker Cup.
He turned professional in 2005 and was a 2005 PGA Tour qualifier medalist. The following year, he won the FBR Open, making him the fastest golfer to earn $1,000,000 in a career on the PGA Tour. He managed to earn that number in his fourth PGA round.
In 2007, his form took a turn for the worse and he only finished twice in the top ten. It ranked 118th on the money list this year. In 2008 he won the FBR Open for the second time. With this victory, he rose to 62nd place in the official world golf rankings. At the end of 2018, he reached number 42 in the career rankings.
