Skaggs was 27 when he died in his Texas hotel room on July 1, just hours after the Angels arrived on a flight from California. An autopsy revealed that Skaggs had a mixture of fentanyl, oxycodone and alcohol extracted from his system.

In October, the Times reported that at least six Angels players had been questioned by US Drug Enforcement Administration agents at the time of Skaggs’ death.

Additionally, on August 30, 2019, a Texas coroner announced that an autopsy performed by Skaggs detected a mixture of fentanyl, oxycodone, and alcohol in his system. Skaggs had a blood alcohol level of 0.12, above the legal limit of 0.08 for driving. An investigation found that Skaggs died of suffocation after choking on his own vomit and his death was ruled an accident. An Angels employee admitted to supplying Skaggs with oxycodone.

The Skaggs family could ask for tens of millions of dollars in a wrongful death lawsuit from any party at least partially responsible for his death.
