Tarek El Moussa was born on August 21, 1981 in Long Beach, California, United States. He is of Arab-European descent, as his father grew up in Lebanon and Egypt and his mother is Belgian. When he was a teenager, his father moved to Europe. He grew up with a sister named Dominique.

Moussa became a licensed real estate agent at the age of 21. After getting the real estate license from him, he immediately started selling houses. He also met his ex-wife Christina Haack while she was working in the flip business. Moussa and Christina quickly came together, where she led the renovations while Christina focused on the design part.
Their business did well until 2008, when the economic crisis hit them. Tarek and Christina later ran the El Moussa group in Orange County.
