Career
Subrata Roy began his career in 1976 as a businessman. He joined a company called Sahara Finance that managed a pension fund, but the company was not doing well and he took over. Later, in 1978, Subrata changed the financial model of the company and used the old Peerless Group model.
In 1990, Subrata moved to Lucknow, which later became the base for his Sahara group. In the late 1990s, he launched his Sahara City project, which included 217 self-sufficient communities, and the company has since grown into a multi-split Indian conglomerate. Now the company is interested in financial services, education, tourism, real estate, entertainment, health and hospitality.
In 1992, the company launched the Hindi newspaper Rashtriya Sahara and, in the late 1990s, the famous Aamby Valley project near Pune, Maharashtra, India. In 2000, Sahara launched Sahara TV, which was renamed Sahara One. Sahara also launched three weekly magazines in different languages in 2003 called Sahara Time, Sahara Samay, and Sahara Alami.
In 2010 and 2012, Sahara owned the iconic Grosvenor House Hotel in London, as well as the historic Plaza and Dream Down Town hotels in New York. In 2004, around 1.4 million people worked in the Sahara and there were 29.6 million investors and savers.
In addition to its entrepreneurial ideology, Sahara Group has also contributed to the relief of the company in various natural disasters. In 2013, during the floods in Uttarakhand, the Sahara distributed bottled drinking water, packaged juices, food bags, candles and matchboxes to the victims. They also provided free doctors and medicines to 25 health facilities and contributed to the rehabilitation program by providing 10,000 prefabricated houses.

Subrata Roy has received various awards and recognitions throughout his career. In 2013 he received an Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration from the University of East London. He was also named Business Icon of the Year at the 2011 Power Brands Hall of Fame Awards in London.
In 2007 he was named ITA TV Icon of the Year and in 2004 he received the Global Leadership Award. In addition, he has received numerous prestigious awards including Entrepreneur of the Year Award, Best Industry Award, Professional Excellence Award, National Citizen Award, Indian Television Academy Award and many other awards.
He also received an honorary doctorate from D. Litt of Lalita Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga. He is also listed among India’s 50 Most Influential People since 2003. In 2012, he was also listed as one of India’s 10 Most Influential Businessmen and was named India’s second largest employer by Time magazine.
Controversy
Subrata Roy was embroiled in controversy when India’s Supreme Court ruled for his imprisonment on February 26, 2014. He failed to appear in court in a legal dispute with market regulator SEBI.
After the trial, his lawyer said that Subrata’s mother had health problems and needed his support, so she did not go to court. After this incident, Subrata was detained in Tihar Prison and has been on parole since 2016.
He issued the bail multiple times for various reasons and still had to pay Rs 10,621 crore to settle his debt. Roy sold most of his property to raise money, but recently said the fundamentals of the business were not affected as assets outweigh liabilities.
He also claimed to have invested more than Rs 20,000 and has already paid out 95% of his company’s depositors. Subrata Roy, his wife and his children recently obtained citizenship of the Republic of Macedonia, the central Balkan peninsula in southeastern Europe, and are no longer citizens of India.
