Early life

Steve Burns was born on October 9, 1973 in Boyertown, Pennsylvania, United States. He was born to his parents Joseph and Janet Burns. Burns grew up with two sisters. For his education, he attended the Boyertown District High School. In 1992 he obtained a scientific high school diploma.

Burns was interested in music from an early age and played in the bands Nine Pound Truck, Sudden Impact US and The Ivys. He later developed an interest in acting and enrolled at DeSales University to study acting. Halfway through, however, he dropped out of school and moved to New York.

Burns got his first job as a voice actor for commercials. At the time he was living in a basement near Times Square. He subsequently had various roles on the television series Law & Order and Homicide: Life on the Street. In 1995 he auditioned for Blue’s Clues. However, he thought it was some kind of off-screen role.

At first glance, Steve failed to impress Nickelodeon executives, but he was eventually selected out of 100 auditions. Nickelodeon executive producer and co-creator Tracy Paige Johnson called it the most authentic of the 100. Blue’s Clues became an instant hit simply because of Byrne’s performance on the show, which suited the show’s format.
