Early life

Patrick Leahy was born on March 31, 1940 in Montpelier, Vermont, United States. He is the son of Alba and Howard Francis Leahy. He has been blind in his left eye since his birth. Patrick’s father was of Irish descent and immigrated to Vermont in the 19th century to work in granite mills and quarries in Barre Town and Barre City.

Regarding his studies, he attended Saint-Michel High School in Montpellier. In 1957 he graduated from high school. In 1961 he entered St. Michael’s College, majoring in political science. In 1964 he entered the Georgetown University Law Center, where he earned a law degree. Patrick became a partner in a law firm after being called up to the bar.

Leahy was appointed as the Chittenden County District Attorney in May 1966 by Vermont Governor Philip H. Hoff. As a prosecutor, she was known for participating in the sting operation that captured undercover police officer Paul Lawrence. He ran for the United States Senate in 1974 and won a small race against Republican Congressman Richard W. Mallary in August of that year.

Patrick became the youngest United States Senator in Vermont history. In 1980 he defeated Republican Stuart Ledbetter in the presidential election. Then, in March 1982, he was appointed to the Senate Select Committee. In November 2004 he defeated his opponent Jack McMullen with 70.6% of the vote. In February 2018, he was one of four senators who signed a letter to Secretary of Defense James Mattis.

Patrick ran for Vermont Senator Bernie Sander during the 2020 presidential campaign. He was hospitalized in January 2021, hours after being sworn in as president in Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial. However, he quickly recovered and returned home the same day.

As of May 2021, he seemed headed for a ninth term. However, on November 15, 2021, he announced that he would be leaving the Senate and not running for a ninth term.
