Early life
Michael W. Smith was born on October 7, 1957, in Kenova, West Virginia, USA. He was born to parents Paul and Barbara Smith. His father worked at an oil refinery in Ashland and his mother was a restaurateur. He showed an early interest in music while attending Belmont Church in Nashville.
Smith sang in the church choir, where he also learned to play the piano. At the age of 10, he became a devout Christian. Growing up, he began to feel lonely and alienated, as most of his older Christian friends went to college.
Michael attended Marshall University but dropped out after one semester. He played with several local bands in West Virginia before moving to Nashville to pursue a career in music.

He landed in Nashville and began working as a landscape gardener in 1978 to earn a living. During this time, he pursued his musical dream by playing with various local bands. In 1979 he was chosen as keyboardist for the Christian music group Higher Ground.
Smith joined Meadowgreen Music in 1981, where he wrote many gospel songs for artists such as Cathy Troccoli, Sandy Patty, Amy Grant, and Bill Gaither. He then recorded his first solo album in 1983 called The Michael W. Smith Project, which was later nominated for a Grammy.
In 1984 he released his second album Michael W. Smith 2 and two years later he released his third album The Big Picture in 1986. Smith achieved commercial success with the release of his sixth album Go West Young Man in 1990. The album includes the popular crossover “Place in this world”.
On September 11, 2001, he released his first music album entitled Worship. Shortly after a year, she released a follow-up album titled Worship Again in 2002. Both albums were recorded live. On the next album, she wrote a song called There She Stands inspired by the 9/11 attacks.
