Early life
Matisyahu was born Matthew Paul Miller on June 30, 1979 in West Chester, Pennsylvania, USA. He was raised by his parents as a Reconstruction Jew. In fact, Matisyahu spent much of his childhood learning the principles of Judaism. He also attended a Jewish school.
However, Matisyahu did not like his harsh upbringing. As a teenager, he began to raise his voice against his upbringing. He even started using drugs and dropped out of school halfway through. In 1995, he took part in a two-month program at the Alexander Mouss High School in Israel. He completed his high school education while participating in a wildlife program in Oregon.

In Oregon, he discovered himself as a Jewish New York rapper. He called himself Matt. Around this time, he became more into music, writing for hours in his bedroom and practicing his style of hip hop music.
In the early days of his career, he performed as MC Truth for over a year. He signed with JDub Records in 2004 and released his debut studio album Shake Off the Dust… Arise soon after. He released his next live album Live at Stubb’s in 2005. After the release of the live album, he toured exclusively in the United States, Canada and Europe.
In August 2010 he returned to Stubb’s and began live recording of his third live album, Live at Stubb’s, Vol.2. He released the album on February 1, 2011. To date, he has released his sixth studio album and five live albums. Matisyahu released their sixth studio album Undercurrent on May 19, 2017.

Matisyahu is married to a woman named Thalia Dressler. He first met her when she was interviewing him for a documentary about men and women who don’t touch. At the time, Talia was a film student at New York University. After getting to know each other well, the couple got engaged in April 2019. A month later, on May 19, 2019, they exchanged wedding vows in a private ceremony.
With his wife Talia, he has three sons named Laivi, Shalom and Menachem Mendel. He also has a daughter named Sasha with his ex-girlfriend Toma Danley. His daughter Sasha has been living with Danley since birth.
