Early life

Matisyahu was born Matthew Paul Miller on June 30, 1979 in West Chester, Pennsylvania, USA. He was raised by his parents as a Reconstruction Jew. In fact, Matisyahu spent much of his childhood learning the principles of Judaism. He also attended a Jewish school.

However, Matisyahu did not like his harsh upbringing. As a teenager, he began to raise his voice against his upbringing. He even started using drugs and dropped out of school halfway through. In 1995, he took part in a two-month program at the Alexander Mouss High School in Israel. He completed his high school education while participating in a wildlife program in Oregon.
