Joel Austin was born March 5, 1963 in Houston, Texas. He is the son of John Austin, a former Southern Baptist pastor who founded Lakewood Church.
Austin was educated at Humble High School before attending Oral Roberts University where he studied radio and telecommunications. However, he did not finish high school. However, Austin applied what he learned to create his father’s television sermons beginning in 1982.
