James Michael Tyler was born on May 28, 1962 in Greenwood, Mississippi, United States. He grew up with four brothers. James is named after his uncle. At the age of 10 he lost his father and after a year his mother died. A year later he moved to Anderson, South Carolina, where he lived with his sister.

As for his education, he first attended Anderson College, where he earned a two-year bachelor’s degree in 1982. Two years later, he entered Clemson University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in geology. While studying with Clemson, he acted as one of the members of the student theater company The Clemson Players.

While working in a theater company, he became interested in acting. In 1987 she received a master’s degree from the University of Georgia, specializing in fine arts. She later moved to Los Angeles in search of more acting opportunities. There she began working as a production assistant on The Fat Man and the Little Boy in 1989.
