Demetrius Andrade was born on February 26, 1988 in Providence, Rhode Island, United States. He started boxing in 1994 at the age of 6. Demetrius was nicknamed Boo Boo. After a successful amateur career, he gained recognition throughout the United States.

In 2005 he won the United States amateur boxing title. In 2006 he managed to defend his title. In the same year he won the National Golden Gloves, belonging to the welterweight division. In 2006 he won the title again.
