Dana was born on May 9, 1972 in Evanston, Wyoming and grew up in Denver, Colorado. She was born to Janice and Leo Perino. Perino attended Ponderosa High School and later earned a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications from Colorado State University Pueblo. She later earned a master’s degree in public relations from the University of Illinois at Springfield.

After graduating from college, he worked the 2-6 am shift at KCCYFM. He later worked at WCIA, the CBS affiliate of the Illinois Capitol. Her next move was to work for Congressman Scott McInnis as a staff aide and later as a press officer for Rep. Dan Schaefer.
She briefly moved to the UK before returning to Washington to join the White House staff as White House CEQ Deputy Director of Communications. Two months after the 9/11 attacks, Andy Card hired her as deputy director of communications.
From 2005 to 2007 she was Deputy Press Secretary. On August 31, 2007, she was announced as a White House press officer. She served from September 14, 2007 until the end of the Bush administration in January 2009.
After leaving the White House, he became a star on Fox News. In November 2009, President Barack Obama appointed her to the Broadcasting Board of Governors.
