Clinton Portis was born on September 1, 1981 in Laurel, Mississippi, United States. He was born to his parents Clint and Ronnel Y. Hearn. Portis has two older brothers. For his studies, he entered Indus Valley High School. He later enrolled at the University of Miami.

Portis played for the varsity team, the Miami Hurricanes football team. He was about to attend the University of South Carolina, but his scholarship was canceled due to high school violence.

Clinton got off to a great start as a rookie with five runs for 100 yards. He also led his college team with 8 touchdowns and 838 receiving yards in 10 games.
