Bryson was born on September 16, 1993 in Modesto, California. He attended Clovis East High School and was already an active golfer.
At 16, Bryson won the California State Junior Championship. He then was accepted on a scholarship to Southern Methodist University, where he studied physics. He won the NCAA championship and the US amateur title, becoming the fifth player to do so.

After early success as an amateur, Bryson made his PGA Tour debut in 2015. That year he also played at the Australian Masters, where he finished second. In 2016, Bryson had already signed with CobraPuma Golf, which recognized his potential from the start. His first big wins included RBC Heritage, where he finished fourth and ended up earning $259,000.
