Bowden was born on November 8, 1929, in Birmingham, Alabama. When Bowden was just 13 years old, he suffered from rheumatism, which left him bedridden for over a year. Bowden began following college football around this time, where he watched University of Alabama football.

After his recovery, he became an excellent football player at Woodlawn High School. He then enrolled at the University of Alabama, where he played quarterback. He then transferred to Howard College, where he continued to excel in football, even earning All-American honors as a quarterback.

Upon graduation, Bowden began working as an assistant football coach at Howard College. He later assumed the role of athletic director for the College of South Georgia until 1958. For many years, Bowden worked as an assistant coach at West Virginia University, eventually moving to Florida State Seminole.

He has also been active in philanthropy with the Christian Athletes Fellowship, for which he received the Children’s Champion Award for Leadership Development.
