Early Life
Bowden was born on November 8, 1929, in Birmingham, Alabama. When Bowden was just 13 years old, he suffered from rheumatism, which left him bedridden for over a year. Bowden began following college football around this time, where he watched University of Alabama football.
After his recovery, he became an excellent football player at Woodlawn High School. He then enrolled at the University of Alabama, where he played quarterback. He then transferred to Howard College, where he continued to excel in football, even earning All-American honors as a quarterback.

Upon graduation, Bowden began working as an assistant football coach at Howard College. He later assumed the role of athletic director for the College of South Georgia until 1958. However, he was fired there and returned to Howard as head coach. There he was able to show excellent results, which helped him work as an assistant coach at Florida State University. For many years, Bowden worked as an assistant coach at West Virginia University, eventually moving to Florida State Seminole.

In 1949, Bowden married Ann Estock, his childhood sweetheart. They raised six children together and are also the grandparents of 21 children. Bowden identifies as a Christian and even mentioned that his success as a football coach is due to his strong faith.
He has also been active in philanthropy with the Christian Athletes Fellowship, for which he received the Children’s Champion Award for Leadership Development. Bowden’s children have also followed in her father’s footsteps, as her three sons, Tommy, Terry and Jeff, have served as coaches and coordinators for various teams. On July 21, 2021, Bowden was diagnosed with a terminal illness.
