Early Life

Vicente was born in a place called Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Vicente started playing the guitar when he was only eight years old and was influenced by the films of Pedro Infante, which planted the seeds of music in his mind.

As a child he participated in various festivals and sang, in particular, participating in various competitions. In an interview, he recalled winning 31 pesos at the age of 12 in a contest that gave him confidence in his musical abilities. This prompted him to play for various local clubs and rallies.

His father owned a ranch where Vicente spent most of his childhood. But unfortunately, his father lost the ranch and Vicente dropped out of school when he was only in fifth grade.

Fernández began his career working as a janitor, dishwasher and waiter to make ends meet. However, he pursued his musical ambitions, whatever his life situation might be.

In 1960 Vicente decides to dedicate himself entirely to music. He performed as a busker and also appeared in the musical Kalandria. Thanks to his perseverance, in 1966 he managed to get a contract with CBS Records International in Mexico.

Vicente was involved in a long-term partnership until his retirement with the same label, now called Sony Music Latin.

He also began to make waves over the years with one of his first hits, La ley del monte, released in 1974.

Personal Life

In 1963 Vicente married María del Refugio “Cooka” Abarca Villaseñor. With María, the couple had three sons named Vicente Jr., Gerardo and Alejandro. Regarding political affiliation, Vicente was affiliated with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) from 1929 to 2000 and again from 2012 to 2018.

Vicente has been the subject of several controversies, but more recently his hand was seen on a fan’s chest in a photo that sparked outrage on social media. Vicente later apologized for the incident.
