Umar Khalid has been involved in a lot of controversy during his career due to his different ideologies. Many media outlets called him a terrorist after his arrest during a 2016 protest against the death penalty imposed by Maqbool Bhat and Afzal Gur.

He was also mired in controversy when he delivered an impassioned speech to his supporters and other JNU students and presented himself as a freedom fighter after his release from prison. He also posted a controversial post on his Facebook account comparing terrorist Burhan Vani to Che Guevara.

In 2018, he was expelled from the university following a high-level investigation into his involvement in the February 9, 2016 incident by a JNU committee. In the same year, he narrowly escaped and was killed when a man tried to shoot him at close range at the Indian Constitution Club.
