Following his run, he placed third in the 2001 primary, ahead of Elizabeth Burmaster. Following his election, Burmaster appointed Evers as assistant superintendent, a position he held until Burmaster was named president of Nicolet College.
From 2001 to 2009, Evers served as Chairman of the Board of Public School Leaders and Assistant Superintendent of Public Education in Wisconsin. On August 23, 2017, Evers announced that he would seek the Democratic nomination for Governor of Wisconsin in 2018.
