Watkins was born on June 14, 1993, in Fort Myers, Florida. He attended South Fort Myers High School, where she wrote extensively on football, basketball, and track. As a sophomore, he had 33 receptions for 537 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was selected to the Allstate First Team in his junior and senior years.
Rivals.com considered Watkins a five-star recruit. He has received scholarship offers from Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan and Tennessee, but has chosen Clemson University.
In his first season at Clemson University, he caught 82 passes for 1,219 yards and 12 touchdowns. He broke 11 freshman records in high school, including the overall record previously held by CJ Spiller. The Football Writers Association of America named him a Freshman AllAmerican.
