Richard Trumka was born on July 24, 1949 in Nemacolin, Pennsylvania, United States. His father, Frank Richard Trumka, was a Polish American and his mother, Eola Elizabeth, was an Italian American. Richard’s father worked as a miner and joined his father in 1968 to help him work in the mines.

Regarding his education, he attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1971. He later entered the Villanova University School of Law. In 1974 he received a law degree with a doctorate in law.

Trumka began working as a lawyer for the United Mine Workers of America (UNWA) in 1974. After serving there for five years, he was elected to the UMWA District 4 Board of Directors in 1981. It was only a year before he became in UMWA president.
