Early Life

Norm Macdonald was born on October 17, 1959, in Quebec, Canada, the son of Fern and Percy Lloyd Macdonald. His parents were teachers and worked at the CFB Valcartier military base in Quebec. He also has an older brother named Neil McDonald, a reporter for CBC News.

Regarding his education, he attended Quebec High School and then Gloucester High School in Ottawa. MacDonald was interested in comedy from an early age. In 1985 he was performing in Ottawa and was a regular at Yuk Yuk, a national chain of comedy clubs in Canada. His popularity grew and he was hired as a writer for the 1992-1993 season of the sitcom Roseanne.

In 1993, McDonald joined SNL, where he performed parodies of Larry King, Quentin Tarantino, and Bob Dole. One of his most notable experiences was Burt Reynolds as a member of Jeopardy!. He was also known for hosting “Weekend Update”.

In 1998, McDonald was fired as host of Weekend Update due to falling ratings and replaced by Colin Quinn. After being fired, he appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman and Howard Stern, where he accused NBC president Don Ohlmeyer of firing him for joking about OJ Simpson.

After leaving SNL, McDonald starred in the comedy Dirty Work with Artie Lange. In the same year, she voiced the character Lucky the Dog in the movie Dr. Wilson. Doolittle.”

MacDonald was married to Connie Vallancourt. They married in 1988 but separated in April 1999. Together they had a son named Dylan, born in 1993.

On September 14, 2021, McDonald’s died of cancer at the age of 61. Nine years ago he was diagnosed with cancer.
