Early Life

Growing up in Oakland, her entire family was a huge fan of the Golden State Warriors, who introduced her to basketball. However, growing up, Malika herself faced significant challenges that led to depression and anxiety.

She attended Head Royce School but was expelled in the eighth grade due to an eating disorder. This created problems in her family and caused several conflicts. This worried her parents and they decided to send him to a therapeutic boarding school in Utah for a year. It was a great decision for her parents as Malika was able to recover from her past and even graduate at 17 years old.

Malika decided to take a gap year before going to college, where she would work for her grandfather’s civil rights law firm. Her experience has taught her that her office job is not for her and that instead she would like to do her parent’s job that does not limit office life.

With this in mind, Malika will be enrolling at the University of Portland, graduating in 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts. She was also very active during her college years, where she worked as a sports journalist. She also at the university had a student newspaper “Mayak”, where she worked as an editor. A demonstration of her potential led her to win a scholarship from the National Association of Black Journalists.

After graduating from college, Malika began interning at the Denver Post, where her work at The Beacon helped her get hired. She also worked as a reporting researcher for James Reston at the New York Times. She further enriched her experience with a year at the Chicago Tribune.

Malika eventually began working as a reporter for ESPN.com. Initially, she covered teams like the Milwaukee Bucks and the Chicago Bulls. She has now posted a lot of content on ESPN and even caused controversy in 2019 when a player named Giannis Antetokounmpo walked out of a press conference citing his disapproval of an article Malika wrote.

She was recently announced as a supporting reporter for coverage of the NBA Finals after she was removed from her role as host of the main finals following a libelous audio leak.
