When Garner and Clark married, their daughter Kim, from a previous marriage, was seven years old and recovering from polio.
On January 4, 1958, Garner had a daughter with Lois, the author, songwriter, philanthropist, and entertainer Greta “Gigi” Garner.
In a Good Housekeeping interview with Garner, his wife, and their two daughters, conducted at their home and published in March 1976, Gigi was 18 and Kim was 27.
In 1970, Garner and his wife briefly lived apart for three months. In late 1979, Garner separated from his wife again (when The Rockford Files stopped filming), dividing her time between living in Canada and “renting a house in the valley.”
