After graduating, Sprewell was immediately selected in the 1992 NBA draft where he was selected 24th by the Golden State Warriors. His rookie season was truly impressive as he played extensively in almost 70 games that season. Sprewell continued to perform well in the following seasons, making him stand out among the top prospects.
However, in 1997 there was a serious accident that tarnished his reputation throughout his career. In December 1997, Sprewell was involved in a disastrous accident in which he disagreed with then-trainer P. Carlesimo during training.
Dissatisfied with some of the head coach’s suggestions, Sprewell decided to be aggressive, causing him to throttle the coach for about 10 seconds. Other players immediately rushed in to put an end to this altercation, but Sprewell was still in a bad mood and had a few hits with other teammates as well.
This led to the NBA suspending Sprewell for the entire season, with the Warriors agreeing to cancel the remainder of his remaining contract, which was worth approximately $23 million. This led to disputes between Sprewell and the Warriors in court over the decision. In the years that followed he was successful with the New York Knicks, even signing a $62 million contract, but in the later stages he struggled to get a contract at the salary he had asked for.
