Larry Elder Biography

Larry Elder was born on April 27, 1952 in Los Angeles, California, United States. He spent his childhood in PicoUnion and in the South Central region. Elder’s father, Randolph, served as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. His family moved to California during the second great migration.

Larry lost his father in 2011 and was later raised primarily by his mother Viola with two brothers. His mother was employed by the United States War Department during World War II.

For education, he attended Crenshaw High School, graduating in 1970. He then enrolled at Brown University. In 1974 he graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree. In 1977 he received his JD from the University of Michigan Law School.

Larry Elder’s Career

Upon graduation, Elder joined the law firm of Cleveland, Squire, Sanders & Dempsey. Then, in 1980, he founded the executive investigative law firm of Laurence A. Elder and Associates. He worked at the company until 1987. Although he left the company, he remained the owner until 1995.

Larry began his career as a co-host on the Fabric-themed television show in 1988. The television show aired on PBS’s WVIZ channel. Then, in 1997, he worked as the host of a PBS show called National Desk. From 2000 to 2001 he worked on the special edition of KCALTV News Making Waves LAUSD. In 2000, he received a Los Angeles Emmy Award for Outstanding Performance on KCALTV.

Elder gained popularity after he began hosting the syndicated talk show The Larry Elder Show in 2004. The talk show was hosted by Warner Bros. Larry also gained wide exposure through other radio shows. In 1994, he hosted a weekday afternoon talk show on radio station KABC Rede.

He left the radio station on December 12, 2008. However, he returned to the radio station on September 27, 2010. After four years of service, he was finally discharged from KABC on December 2, 2014. In July 2021, Elder announced that he would run for office in the upcoming California gubernatorial election against incumbent California Governor Gavin Newsom.
