On Saturday, October 2, 2021, former NASCAR driver John Townley was killed outside Five Points Arena in Athens, Georgia. The death is allegedly part of a double homicide that also injured a 30-year-old woman.
The Clark County Police Department in Athens intervened on the scene. Both people were taken to a local hospital as soon as possible, police said. Unfortunately, the former breeder died of gunshot wounds and the woman remained in critical condition.

Authorities believe the killer was a 32-year-old man from Dunwoody, but no formal charges have yet been filed against him, a police source said. It was reported that the perpetrator knew the victim.
His death shocked his followers as he was only 31 years old at the time of his death. He leaves his wife, Laura Bird Townley.
