Early life

Joe Schilling was born on January 13, 1984 in Dayton, Ohio, United States. He was raised by a single mother with two brothers. Joe has had a difficult childhood since he moved to four different schools after being expelled from each school. He started muay thai at the age of 15. At 17, he was kicked out of his apartment.

Joe survived by doing odd jobs. He lived on a small property owned by his grandmother. In a difficult situation, he thought of starting his wrestling career in local combat competitions. After his grandmother died, he moved to Los Angeles and found work at the YMCA as a personal trainer.

While working as a personal trainer, he meets Mark Komuro, with whom he starts a Spartan gym. The high school opened in a dilapidated building that was once the Lincoln Heights City Jail. In 2007, the duo, Joe and Mark, opened a Muay Thai gym in Lincoln Heights.
