Jerry Remy (real name Gerald Peter Remy) was born on November 8, 1952 in Fall River, Massachusetts, United States. He spent his childhood in nearby Somerset. For his studies, he entered Somerset High School. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at Roger Williams University.

Jerry began his playing career after being selected by the Washington Senators in the 1970 MLB Draft. Despite being selected by the Senators, he did not sign with the team. He was subsequently selected by the California Angels in the 1971 MLB Draft and, unlike his previous draft selection, he was ultimately selected a second time by the team.
