Huma Abedin was born on July 28, 1976 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States. She was born to her parents Syed Zainul and Salehi Mahmoud Abedin. Huma grew up with her two siblings, a brother and a sister. When she was two years old, she moved with her family to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Abedin attended a British girls’ school. When she was a teenager, she returned to the United States and enrolled at George Washington University. She graduated from college with a degree in journalism. As a teenager she wanted to be a journalist. She was heavily influenced by journalist Christiane Amanpour.
