Former ITV editor Geoff Hill has died after a four-year battle with leukaemia, just nine months after marrying at the closing ceremony.

We pay tribute to the “giant of our industry” who passed away in hospital last week while recovering from illness.

Mr Hill, from Lee, southeast London, married his fiancée Natalie last December in a hastily arranged ceremony at the Clarendon Hotel in Blackheath, attended by just 13 guests.

The father of Emily, 20, Olivia, 10, and Alfie, 9, he spent almost 30 years in journalism, working mainly for ITV, but also for CNN, Setanta Sports and Channel 5.

Natalie said today: “I’m sure many of you will join me and her family as you are even more devastated that she left this world. What kind of life did she lead and what impact did she have.

ITV editor Geoff Hill dies of leukemia less than a year after his marriage as his colleagues pay tribute to the “giant of our industry”. In September 2017, Mr. Hill was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent a stem cell transplant, 100 rounds of chemotherapy, and 38 bone marrow biopsies.

He also underwent radiation therapy, took more than 6,000 pills, suffered severe sepsis in March 2019 that nearly killed him, and went into an induced coma in July.

A London fan of Crystal Palace Football Club, Mr Hill began his career in the capital’s newspapers before joining ITV’s regional news program London Tonight in 1993.

He joined ITV News in 2000 and worked there for seven years before becoming editor of Setanta Sports News, director of coverage for CNN and editor of Channel 5 News.

In 2013 he returned to ITV News as editor, overseeing coverage of the 2015 and 2017 general elections, the Scottish referendum and the 2016 EU referendum.
