Early Life
Born on August 3, 1996, in Haynes City, Florida, James attended Auburndale High School, where he began playing football. He later moved to Haynes City High School in his hometown. Rivals.com rated him five stars as a rookie and ranked him the fifth best player in his class. James decided to play college football at Florida State University.

He went to Florida State as a replacement in 2015, but finished as a regular. As a freshman, he played 12 games with 91 tackles, 4.5 sacks, four passes defensed, two forced fumbles and two stolen fumbles.
His second year he was suspended due to a knee injury. He only played two games with 11 tackles and one interception. James got the red jersey the following year. In 2017 he played 12 games and recorded 84 tackles, 2 interceptions, 11 defensive passes and a sack. At the end of the year, he decided to forgo his two-year eligibility and enter the NFL Draft.
Derwin James was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He signed a $12.38 million, four-year contract that included a $7.09 million signing bonus.
James made his professional debut against the Kansas City Chiefs, recording a combined three tackles and two passes. He was named to his first Pro Bowl as a freshman and was ranked 31st on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2019 list. He only played 5 games in the 2019 season due to a stress fracture in his right leg .
