Early Life

Patten was born on August 19, 1974, in Hopkins, South Carolina. He started playing soccer at Lower Richland High School. Patten then enrolled at Western Carolina University, where he played college football.

As a junior, he averaged 3.6 receptions and in his senior season he recorded 59 receptions for 881 yards. He was also named to the AllSouthern Conference team.

Patten was not selected in the 1996 NFL Draft, but went on to play for the Albany Firebirds of the Arena Football League. His first game came on August 2, 1996, when he scored 5,449 wins over the Milwaukee Mustang. In that game, he caught two passes for 37 yards.

On March 24, 1997, he was signed by the New York Giants. In the same year he played 16 games with the Giants, in which he had 13 passes for 226 yards and eight returns for 123 yards. A year later he played 12 games with the Giants in which he came back with 43 kickoffs for 928 yards and a touchdown. In the 1999 season he played a total of 16 games in which he recorded nine receptions for 115 yards.

Patten was signed by the New England Patriots as a free agent in 2001. He started 14 games that year and set a career high with 51 receptions for 749 yards. On October 21, 2001, he set the record for speed, receiving, and touchdown throwing with 3,817 wins, earning him the AFC Offensive Player of the Week award for his outstanding play. In the same year he won his first Super Bowl.

In 2002, Patten started 14 games and had a career high of 61 receptions, 824 yards, and five touchdowns. Patten missed most of the game by him due to injury in the 2004 season. However, he returned to win his third Super Bowl ring in a Super Bowl XXXIX victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Patten then signed a five-year, $13 million contract with the Washington Redskins. In his first season with the Redskins, he started seven of his first nine games before being placed on the disabled list. He finished that season with 22 receptions for 217 yards.

After being released by the Washington Redskins, Patton signed a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints. He then signed with the Cleveland Browns and returned to New England for a second term. On July 31, 2010 he announced his retirement.
