Boomer was raised by his father seven years ago when his mother, Irene, died of ovarian cancer. He attended East Islip High School and graduated in 1979.

Boomer has been involved in various sports from a very young age, including soccer and basketball. He later moved to the University of Maryland after being offered a full scholarship.
