Early life
Ben Akren was born on July 18, 1984 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, United States. He was born in the house of Chuck and Michelle Askren. He has a younger brother named Max who is also a wrestler. His brother won the 2010 national championship.
Ben graduated from Arrowhead High School. During his high school days, he was a two-time state wrestling champion. He later attended the University of Missouri, where he became an amateur wrestler.

In 2004 he competed for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). However, he was unable to win in the first few games. He lost a wrestling match against Chris Pendleton in 2004 and 2005 for two years. Ben got back into shape in 2006 and continued his win in 2007. While wrestling in the NCAA, he was known for his striking ability.
In his 2005-06 junior season, he dominated the game, winning all 45 games in 25 bowls. He was undefeated in his junior season and received the NCAA Championship Best Wrestler award.
Ben continued his dominant play into his 200607 senior season. He set an unbeaten record of 420. He won his second NCAA championship by defeating Keith Gavin. Ben then won the match for the Dan Hodge Trophy. This victory made him only the second person to win the Dan Hodge Trophy twice.
