Early Life
Shaw was born on July 20, 1991, in Belleville, Ontario, the son of Doug Shaw and Darlene Shaw. His younger brother, Jason, is also a hockey player who played in the Ontario Hockey League and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. He also has an older brother named Josh and an older sister named Alex.

Andrew began his youth career with the Niagara Ice Dogs of the Ontario Hockey League. His first game was with the Ottawa 67s. He scored his first OHL youth goal against the Plymouth Whalers.
Selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fifth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. In his first season, he split his time between the Chicago Blackhawks and their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs.
Shaw made his professional hockey debut on October 8, 2011 against the Grand Rapids Griffins. On January 3, 2012, Shaw signed a three-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks.
On June 24, 2016, Shaw was traded to the Montreal Canadiens. He signed a six-year, $23.4 million contract with the Canadiens. Shaw returned to Chicago three years later.
